Market Murmurs Report : A Day on the Farmville

July 9, 2010

This qualitative research report focuses on players of the online Facebook game Farmville, their play habits, and their usage of Farmville fan sites.  The report includes data and recommendations that marketers, web and game developers, and website owners can use to attract players to Farmville-related services such as fan sites.

Counter to expectations, most Farmville players were not interested in playing with individuals they did not already know, despite the game’s international availability, and despite the presence of in-game rewards for meeting new people.  The report shows that Farmville players had no specific goals for the game, but still played a surprisingly large amount of time, between 1 and 8 hours each day. Farmville players typically organize their playtime around their schedules, logging in at specific times of day depending on when their friends were active, how long it would be until they could next log in, and other factors. Farmville players enjoyed the simplicity of the game play and were potentially interested in playing similar games and spending more time on such games in the future.
